Plickers

This week I am talking about a tool I have used in the past called Plickers. This tool is a simple, low cost app that can be used at any grade level K-12. This app is especially great for those classrooms that only have a few devices. Only one device is needed!

 Plickers is an assessment tool made by a teacher who was looking for a quick and simple way to check student understanding. This assessment tool allows teachers to collect on-the-spot formative assessment data without the need to have students use devices or paper and pencil.

Here's how it works...

1. Simply start by creating a free account on plickers.com. 
2. Create a class roster and it will assign each student a unique plicker card. 
3. Print out each student's plicker card. You probably want to do this on cardstock. You can laminate the cards but sometimes the shine makes it hard for the app to read. For elementary students, add their name and the letter options on the back of the cards. 
4. Choose the library tab to create multiple choice or true/false questions.
5. Now you're ready! Display the question and answer choices on the board. Have the students choose their answer and hold up their plicker card. The teacher uses their device to quickly scan the room to collect the students responses. You will see the name of the child and their individual response for each question selected located at the top of your screen on the smart device when their response has been scanned. The number of participates scanned is provided to make certain that all students have responded.

ClassDojo

This week I'm talking about an app that does it all...behavior management, photo/video sharing, and parent communication. Class Dojo is a great way to motivate students, as well as keep parents in the loop.  I originally stated using Classdojo for behavior management. With Dojo, teachers can assign each student their own avatar to which they are assigned points. Teachers can use both positive and "needs work" points for student behavior. One of the features I like most is that you can create your own skills for awarding or deducting points.
