Swivl

This is a topic I'm not super informed on but heard about through my admins former experience. Swivl is a device that allows for easier recording abilities in the classroom. I think it is typically used for teachers but can be helpful in building a library of exemplar lessons within your building. This means teachers can watch other teachers teach without having to leave their own classroom, find coverage, and interrupt their day.

The swivl device allows for hands free recording. Some suggested uses are:

Live Student Observations
Secondary markers record audio of the students AND live stream to the teacher for real-time adjustments in the classroom.

Self Reflection

Teachers record video to review and reflect on their own.

Informal Observations

Teacher driven video observations shared with peers for collective feedback.

Remote Observations

Remote coaches provide in-ear feedback while watching video of the teacher. Use your favorite video streaming app like Zoom.

PLC Collaboration

Get collective feedback from a group of trusted peers to accelerate learning.

Exemplar Libraries

Identify exemplary videos to build a best practice library to share with new teachers.

Check it out here.

  1. Kayla,

I have never used swivl, but I have seen it in use before. I always think it's so interesting and think it would be so beneficial to have in classroom settings. When I first started reading this, I thought of uses for the students. It would be great to record students too. They could then upload these as artifacts in their digital backpacks. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I think the nice part about Swivl is that it's hands-free. I know we don't have KTIP any more but that final observation that could be recorded was always a production to execute. This way the device is set up - even with your phone, and the device follows the voices, much like Zoom does online.
